Lennon Stella Returns from a Six-Year Silence with “Sleeping Lion”

Some artists disappear because the industry moves on. Lennon Stella walked away on purpose, and six years later she’s back with an album named for exactly that kind of quiet, coiled patience: Sleeping Lion.

The title fits her story almost too well. After her 2020 debut Three. Two. One. cracked the Billboard 200 and earned a gold certification for “Kissing Other People,” Stella could have kept riding that momentum. Instead she stepped back entirely, choosing to rebuild her relationship with music on her own terms rather than the industry’s clock. By her own account, the pressure only lifted once people stopped watching closely, and that space is exactly what let her genuine excitement for songwriting come back.

Getting to Sleeping Lion wasn’t a straight line either. Stella reportedly scrapped an entire earlier version of the record before an unplanned collaboration with Canadian singer-songwriter Andy Shauf reshaped the whole project. Shauf ended up producing the album, and his presence seems to have pulled Stella toward something rawer and more unguarded than her pop beginnings, less concerned with polish, more focused on honesty. Longtime co-writer Simon Wilcox reportedly pushed her further in that direction, encouraging her to write without worrying about how the subjects of her songs might feel about being recognized in them.

That fearlessness shows up clearly on lead single “Unforgivable Things,” which examines the strange, indirect ways people sometimes destroy a relationship instead of simply ending it outright. It’s a fitting opening statement for an album built entirely around watching relationships up close and refusing to look away from the uncomfortable parts.
