Bruno Mars’ Debut Album Just Turned 16, and It’s Still Charting

Sixteen years is a long time for a debut album to stay commercially relevant, and Bruno Mars‘ Doo-Wops & Hooligans isn’t just surviving that stretch, it’s still actively charting, having recently logged 748 weeks on the Billboard 200.

Released October 4th, 2010, through Elektra and Atlantic, the album launched Mars from songwriter-for-hire into a genuine solo star almost overnight. It debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 before eventually climbing all the way to number one, and spawned two chart-topping singles in “” and “Grenade,” the former of which has since reached an extraordinary 21 times platinum certification, among the highest the RIAA has ever awarded a single. The album itself went nine times platinum domestically and became the longest-charting debut in Billboard 200 history, a record that’s only grown more remarkable with each passing anniversary.

Part of what made Doo-Wops & Hooligans work so well was how confidently it refused to sit inside one genre. Mars blended soul, reggae, doo-wop, and contemporary pop across the tracklist, pulling in Damian Marley for “Liquor Store Blues” and CeeLo Green alongside B.o.B for closer “The Other Side,” while still keeping the whole project feeling like a cohesive introduction to his voice rather than a scattered guest-list showcase. It’s that same genre-blending instinct that’s carried through his entire catalogue since, right up through this year’s The Romantic.

The timing of this particular anniversary carries extra weight given where Mars currently is in his career. He marked the milestone while wrapping a sold-out five-night run at SoFi Stadium on The Romantic Tour, performing in sharp suits and his now-signature red charro looks alongside his longtime band, The Hooligans. Fans online spent the anniversary sharing throwback art and old performance clips, many noting the strange, satisfying fact that a 2010 debut is still finding new ears in 2026.

MusicPorta says: Doo-Wops & Hooligans holds up remarkably well sixteen years later, Bruno Mars‘ genre-hopping instincts and sheer vocal charisma were fully formed from the very first album. Revisiting it now only reinforces how little his talent has needed to catch up to the hype.
