Noah Kahan Writes for Grief in “Draw You Out”

Noah Kahan has spent years writing about homesickness, anxiety, and the strange ache of growing up in a small town, so handing him the lead single for a Hunger Games prequel about loss and perseverance turns out to make perfect sense.

“Draw You Out” serves as the lead single from The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, The Album, arriving October 2nd ahead of the film’s November 20th release and the full soundtrack’s own drop on November 13th. The song draws its emotional core from the relationship between a young Haymitch, played by Joseph Zada, and his girlfriend Lenore Dove, played by Whitney Peak, a storyline Kahan has described as both tragic and hopeful. He’s spoken openly about being a longtime admirer of Suzanne Collins’s writing, and that connection clearly shaped how personally he approached the assignment.

The song reunites Kahan with producer Aaron Dessner, the same collaborator behind his recent record The Great Divide, recorded across Dessner’s Long Pond Studio in New York alongside Gold Pacific and East Iris Studios in Nashville. That creative pairing shows in the final product, atmospheric, folk-rooted instrumentation that mirrors the hazy, wide-open sound of Kahan’s most recent album, while the lyrics lean into remembrance rather than despair, a narrator holding onto someone’s memory and finding it brings comfort rather than pain.

It’s a notable addition to a soundtrack lineage that’s included Taylor Swift’s Grammy-winning “Safe & Sound” and Olivia Rodrigo’s “Can’t Catch Me Now” from earlier Hunger Games films, and Kahan arrives at a moment when he’s already selling out stadiums across North America on his Great Divide World Tour, which continues into arenas throughout the UK, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand this fall.

MusicPorta says: Noah Kahan finds real tenderness in “Draw You Out,” letting grief sit alongside gratitude rather than overwhelming it entirely. Pairing his folk sensibility with Aaron Dessner’s production gives the song genuine emotional weight, worthy company for one of film’s most storied soundtrack franchises.
