Max Richter Reaches for Connection on “Now We Can Sing”
Max Richter has announced his new album, While The Flood Rages, alongside lead single “Now We Can Sing,” and the meditative track is already drawing significant attention from fans of his work.
Richter has spent more than two decades establishing himself as one of the most recognizable voices in contemporary classical music, known for blending orchestral writing with electronics and minimalist repetition across landmark works like The Blue Notebooks and Sleep. His music has also become a fixture in film, and he recently composed the score for Hamnet, which earned an Oscar nomination for Best Original Score.
“Now We Can Sing” grew out of MaddAddam, a ballet Richter created with choreographer Wayne McGregor inspired by Margaret Atwood’s trilogy of the same name. On the new album, Richter has reworked that material into a standalone listening experience rather than simply presenting the ballet score. The track expands a recurring piano motif into a choral-led piece, using voice as its central instrument to explore themes of connection, and it serves as both the album’s lead single and its closing statement, offering a human presence after the album’s exploration of ecological and technological unease.
The single’s release comes alongside news of Richter’s CBE, awarded in this year’s New Year Honours list for his contribution to British culture, and his recognition as a National Album Day icon alongside artists like PinkPantheress. With While The Flood Rages due October 16 and a series of global listening events planned around it, “Now We Can Sing” is landing at a genuine high point in Richter’s career.
