“Thriller” Finds Its Biggest Audience in Decades, Thanks to a Movie

Forty-four years after it first climbed the charts, Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” is having arguably its biggest resurgence since the original album’s heyday, powered almost entirely by a movie that arrived decades late to tell his story.

The catalyst was Michael, the long-delayed biopic covering Jackson’s rise, which premiered on April 24th, 2026. The streaming response wasn’t just strong, it was staggering. Across Jackson’s top 60 tracks, monthly plays jumped from roughly 467 million before the film’s release to 1.21 billion afterward, an increase of nearly 750 million streams in under a month. Jackson shot to number one on Chartmetric’s trending artists list almost overnight, with The Jackson 5 landing close behind at number three.

“Thriller” itself ended up benefiting from an unusual quirk in how the rollout was structured. The soundtrack for Michael, titled Michael: Songs From The Motion Picture, included its own separate upload of the song distinct from the original 1982 recording, essentially creating two parallel streaming entries for the same classic. That new version alone racked up around 910 million plays on its own, a genuinely strange but effective bit of catalog engineering that helped the song dominate twice over rather than competing with itself.

What’s most notable about the surge is who’s actually driving it. Chartmetric’s data shows 82% of Jackson’s current listener base is under 35, meaning this isn’t simply older fans revisiting a familiar favorite, it’s a younger audience encountering “Thriller” as something closer to new music. Billboard clocked the ripple effects directly too, with the album re-entering the Billboard 200 at number seven and “Billie Jean” climbing back onto the Hot 100, Jackson’s best streaming week ever recorded in the process. And with Halloween approaching, the song’s built-in seasonal pull, thanks to its legendary John Landis-directed video and Vincent Price’s unforgettable spoken outro, only adds another layer of momentum heading into October.

MusicPorta says: “Thriller” continues proving why it’s considered one of pop music’s most complete artistic statements, Quincy Jones’s production and Rod Temperton’s songwriting still hold up against anything released this year. A good biopic clearly helped, but the song was always built to outlast any single moment.
