Hilary Duff Adds a Little Chaos to Her Comeback with “CATastrophe”

Hilary Duff’s musical return has already taken her through arenas on her Lucky Me Tour, so leave it to a six-foot-tall cartoon cat to send that comeback somewhere entirely unexpected.

“CATastrophe,” written for Warner Bros. Animation’s upcoming adaptation of The Cat in the Hat starring Bill Hader, finds Duff co-writing with her husband and frequent collaborator Matthew Koma, alongside Madison Love and Brian Phillips, who handled production together with Koma. Duff has said Dr. Seuss was a constant presence in her household growing up, which made saying yes to the project an easy decision once the opportunity came around.

What’s smart about the song is how it avoids being a disposable movie tie-in. Rather than just referencing the film’s plot, Duff built the track around a genuinely relatable feeling, the disorientation of having your entire life rearranged without any warning or say in the matter, the same uprooting energy that drives the Cat in the Hat’s chaotic visit in the first place. She’s described wanting the song to feel honest about that unease while still working as something loud and fun enough to blast with the windows down, an intentional contrast between the lyrics’ underlying anxiety and the track’s upbeat, hyperactive pop delivery.

The accompanying video leans fully into that whimsy, pulling Duff out of an ordinary moving-day scene and dropping her into a series of oversized, candy-colored Seuss-inspired worlds after she stumbles on the character’s signature red-and-white striped hat. It’s a playful visual anchor for a song that’s ultimately about losing control of your surroundings, timed perfectly for a film arriving in theaters November 6th.

MusicPorta says: Hilary Duff finds real emotional footing inside a kids’ movie soundtrack on “CATastrophe,” turning what could’ve been throwaway promotional fluff into something genuinely catchy and surprisingly honest. It’s a fun, unexpected detour in an already strong comeback year.
